Growing Tips: Plant in a sunny spot. Work lots of compost and organic fertilizer into the planting hole and water well before planting. Put root ball into the hole and bury it up to the first set of leaves. Water deeply once a week.

Landscape: In the landscape, they add a little sunshine in any empty spot. Plant in clusters of 3 or 5 for more impact. They will re-seed readily, so expect them to return next season if left standing. These plants are 24-30” tall, so can benefit from being in the middle of a border to get the sun they need. Will tolerate a little shade.

Cutting Garden: Plant them closer together (6-8”) in rows to promote longer stems as they stretch for the light. Use plant support netting. Harvest weekly to keep them producing. Water deeply the day before harvest.

Harvesting: Cut your first stem when the first bloom is still closed but is fully coloured (it will continue opening after harvest). Cut the central stem first, leaving 6-8 sets of leaves remaining on the plant below the cut. Nice long stems will emerge from this deep cut. Strip off excess foliage, cut the bottom of the stem on an angle. Let them rest for a few hours in cool water and shade before arranging. Ensure you use a container that supports the stems and keeps them straight as they rest and re-hydrate after harvest. If left to droop they won’t recover.

Drying: Hang upside-down in a warm, dry, shaded spot to dry. Check the stems are totally dry before storing to prevent mold. Dried calendula can be used in salves and other natural remedies.
